For Level 1 of MAGD7101 Playful Making I took part in the creation of Storyteller. a card game where multiple players work together to create a narrative using three drawn cards along with their own imagination with the goal is to complete 9 Scenario cards and 1 Goal card.
Originally, I looked into using Stock Images for my portion of the card art however I kept finding sites that had AI-Generated images mixed in with original images; in order to avoid the AI-Generated images I decided to draw the art myself. The artwork I made was kept simple with the idea of being easily recognisable. Upon reflection, the use of stock images would have allowed for more cards to be produced which would have helped to prevent the problem of repeats although the approach taken still led to a good final product so wasn’t a problem in the end.
When making the Guidelines for Play I wanted to avoid the word rules in order to prevent the Storyteller from feeling like they have to follow them. I wanted to have more of a D&D feel to the rules where the DM is free to cater the rules towards the group they are playing with. Upon reflection, this was the better of the two potential approaches as the alternative of the rules being set in stone could have caused the game to feel more limited as by having guidelines instead allows for a near infinite number of variation of rulesets to be created by a community.
Draw 3 cards from the 'Scenario' Deck
Arrange the Scenario's in a sequence for the Players to complete without revealing them to the players
The order can be done randomly or manually, whichever you think will work best
Have the Players assign 1 card as their character, 1 card as their weapon and 1 as their accessory
Reveal the Scenario card's to the players and have them come up with a solution
This completes the round
Have Players draw replace their used weapons and/or accessories
Draw 3 new 'Scenario' cards
Repeat steps 4 through 7 until 9 Scenario Cards have been used
Draw 1 card from either the 'Goal' or 'Scenario' Deck to act as the ending of the game
As the Storyteller, it is your job to decide when a scenario has been completed and the next scenario can begin. Work with the players to create a enjoyable experience.
If necessary, restrictions can be added, removed or changed in order to fit the group of players better, some potential examples could be:
Implementing a word count
Limiting the amount of sentences per action
Limiting the amount of cards per action
Increasing or decreasing amount of scenarios per game
Removing Turn-Based element
Draw 3 cards from the 'Object' Deck
Assign 1 card as your Character, 1 card as your weapon and 1 card as your accessory
Take turns interacting with the current scenario based on your cards
Use the drawn cards as creativity as possible
Each player has to use at least 1 item per 'round'
Weapon and Accessory can be used once each
At the end of the round replace any used weapons and/or accessories and add them to a 'discard' pile
